Answers for Shopify & Amazon sellers

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our specialized ecommerce accounting services.

Can a traditional accountant do the books for my Amazon or Shopify business?

Would you let your pet’s favorite vet extract your troublesome tooth? Is it possible? Yes. Advisable? No. Problematic? Definitely.

OK, so why do ecommerce businesses need a specialized accountant?

Amazon and Shopify payouts net your sales against refunds, fees, and shipping before the deposit hits your bank — and each platform has its own payment schedule, holdbacks, and reserves. Most accountants don’t have the experience or tech stack to reconcile that correctly, or to account for inventory and true gross margins.

We tear down your payout summaries into clean sales, COGS, and expenses — so your books finally reflect what you actually made.

Do you file my sales tax returns?

No — we can track your nexus exposure across states and calculate what you owe using your TaxJar account, so you always know where you stand. Actual registration and filing are handled separately, either by you or your CPA — we’re happy to hand off clean, filing-ready numbers whenever you need them.

What is a Diagnostic Review, and why should I start with one?

A Diagnostic Review is a quick health check of your entire accounting system. We look at your chart of accounts, sales tax setup, inventory valuation, and financial statements to spot errors, duplicate entries, or missing data — giving us a clear picture of your books and whether cleanup work is needed.

Which accounting software and integrations do you support?

We specialize in QuickBooks Online, combined with ecommerce accounting middleware A2X and sales tax automation tool TaxJar (billed directly by TaxJar; we integrate it at no charge). This tech stack integrates seamlessly with sales channels including Shopify and Amazon, as well as payment processors like Stripe, PayPal, and Shop Pay.

What if I don't have QBO?

No problem — most new clients don't have one yet. We'll create your QuickBooks Online account for you and email you your login details, so there's nothing to set up on your end. From there, we connect it to your sales channels and handle the rest.

Do you have access to my bank accounts?

No — we work through your existing (or newly connected) QuickBooks, which is where we get the information required for your bookkeeping. You stay in full control of your accounts at all times.

How secure is my data?

We take data security seriously across our full tech stack. TaxJar is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, independently audited every year. A2X encrypts your data both in transit and at rest using AES-256 encryption. QuickBooks Online undergoes annual PCI DSS certification and encrypts data end-to-end. Together, this tech stack meets the same security standards used across the financial software industry.

What if I’m behind on my books already?

Common, and fixable. We offer a dedicated books reconstruction service to get you fully caught up and CPA-ready before your ongoing monthly service starts. Get in touch and we'll take it from there.

Do you require a contract, and can I cancel anytime?

No separate contract to sign. Checking the agreement box when you sign up puts our month-to-month Terms of Service into effect for your plan — that's it. Cancel anytime with no cancellation fee. An email to us is enough, and your plan runs through the end of your current billing month. We'd rather earn your business every month than lock you into anything longer.

How does onboarding work?

After you sign up, we email you a link to book your onboarding call. During the call, we connect everything together in this order: QuickBooks Online first, then A2X, your sales channels, and your TaxJar account. Prefer to skip the call? Just reply to your welcome email and we’ll take it from there.

How long does setup take?

If you've connected a sales channel or app before, this will feel familiar — a few clicks and you're connected. Most sellers are fully set up within an hour.

What do you need from me each month?

Often nothing, and very little at most — our process is highly automated by design. Occasionally we may have brief questions (usually via email) on expenses from outside your sales platforms, which may need clarification from you so we categorize and report these correctly in your financials.

What if I sell on a platform you don’t list?

Our core specialization is Amazon and Shopify, but we take on other platforms case-by-case. Reach out and we’ll let you know if it’s a fit.

What happens if my sales fluctuate or cross into a different pricing tier?

We review your rolling 60-day trailing revenue average so seasonal spikes or brief dips don't instantly trigger price changes.

If your average revenue moves you into a new tier for two consecutive cycles, we’ll reach out ahead of time to adjust your plan on the next billing date. No surprise mid-month charges, back-billing, or penalties.

Still have questions?

We'll walk you through anything that's still unclear — no pressure, just answers.
